Simple Tools, Big Impact: Supporting Caregivers with Real-World Solutions

Discover how creative, low-cost solutions can support caregivers of adults with developmental disabilities. Explore ways to modify, adapt, and engage with what you already have—while turning challenges into meaningful participation.

Supporting Caregivers Starts with Realistic Tools

As an Occupational Therapist working with adults with developmental disabilities, I know firsthand how tough it can be for caregivers and support staff to find the right tools and materials. It often feels like a full-time job just to sort through the options—many of which are expensive, overwhelming, or simply not the right fit.

And let’s face it: what works for one individual may not work for another. That’s why caregivers need flexible, practical solutions that actually work.

Adapt, Modify, Create – Without Breaking the Bank

In my work—and in the resources I share—I focus on affordable, meaningful adaptations. The kind you can make with things already around the house:

Repurpose puzzle pieces into sensory play tools

Add foam grips to everyday utensils or art supplies

Use painter’s tape or Velcro to stabilize materials

Turn cardboard tubes, and containers into purposeful activity tools

These ideas are not about perfection—they’re about possibility.

Each Person is Unique, and That Can Be a Challenge

In group settings, activity staff often juggle a range of individual needs. Some people use one hand, others are non-verbal, and some may just need time and patience to show you what works best for them.

That’s where creativity—and teamwork—come in. I like to think of it as engineering with heart. I love connecting with others who enjoy solving these puzzles with me—caregivers, creative thinkers, therapists. Together, we can build better ways to engage those who might otherwise be observers.

From Observers to Participants: The Real Goal

What lights me up is seeing someone who typically watches from the sidelines become an active part of a project, conversation, or moment. With the right modifications, participation becomes possible—and joyful.

This space is for all of us who believe in that kind of transformation. I’ll continue to share adaptable strategies and invite you to do the same. Let’s support each other in finding what works—one creative step at a time.

Let’s Keep Creating Together
