Today I spent time creating small pieces of art using scraps, layers, words, and simple materials already sitting around my creative space.
Nothing elaborate.
Nothing perfectly planned.
Just quiet creating.
One small piece ended up holding the phrase:
I am led by my dreams.
And I paused when I read it.
Because I realized how much of my life lately has been shifting from simply doing what feels expected… toward allowing myself to follow what feels meaningful.
Not perfectly.
Not fearlessly.
But honestly.
For many years, like so many people, I focused on responsibility first. Productivity. Structure. The practical path. There is absolutely value in those things.
But somewhere along the way, I also began noticing the importance of listening to the quieter parts of myself:
- the creative ideas,
- the nudges,
- the curiosity,
- the unfinished dreams,
- and the thoughts that kept circling back no matter how busy life became.
Sometimes dreams do not arrive loudly.
Sometimes they appear as small repeated thoughts:
- “What if I tried this?”
- “What if I shared my story?”
- “What if creativity could help someone else feel seen?”
- “What if participation could look different?”
- “What if possibility exists here too?”
Over time, those small thoughts begin shaping direction.
As an Occupational Therapist, I spent years helping others discover ways to participate more fully in life — often by adapting tools, environments, expectations, or approaches. But one thing I continue to learn personally is that dreams often require adaptation too.
Not abandonment.
Adaptation.
Sometimes dreams change shape as we grow.
Sometimes they take longer than expected.
Sometimes they begin later in life than we imagined.
And sometimes they begin with something very small:
a scrap of paper,
a creative moment,
a quiet idea,
or a simple sentence placed onto a tiny block of wood.
I think many people are carrying dreams quietly right now.
Dreams to create.
Dreams to begin again.
Dreams to be seen differently.
Dreams to share their voice.
Dreams to make meaning from difficult experiences.
Dreams to finally allow themselves permission to try.
Not every dream needs to become something huge.
Some dreams simply guide us toward becoming more fully ourselves.
That may be enough.
Today reminded me that creativity is not always about producing something impressive. Sometimes it is simply about listening closely enough to notice what keeps calling you forward.
And maybe that is what dreams do.
They gently lead us toward the parts of ourselves we were always meant to discover.
