There’s something special about a space that holds memories. For me, it’s a table in the quiet of my basement—once part of a bowling alley, now a well-worn place of creativity. It’s not just a workspace; it’s a connection to my past. I can still picture my dad sitting here, carefully crafting intricate stained-glass pieces, letting his hands shape beauty and light. His artistry lives on, cherished by many, including me. Sitting at this table, it gives me the inspiration and opportunity to think creatively in ways to connect with my audience.
Now, I sit at the same table, making my own kind of art. My process is different, yet the feeling is the same—a quiet sense of purpose and joy. Sometimes, I melt crayons and splatter paint to create vibrant backgrounds. Other times, I carefully arrange puzzle pieces into meaningful shapes or craft cards adorned with photographs, markers, and colored pencils. Each piece is infused with inspiration from those around me—family, friends, co-workers, and the individuals of all abilities whom I support. Art becomes more than a hobby; it’s a way to share thoughts, messages, and connections with others.
Creativity and transforming Possibilities ~
In the stillness of creating, something transformative happens. Art is not just about the final piece—it’s about the process, the self-discovery, the moment of being fully engaged. Whether for personal fulfillment, learning a new skill, or simply for the joy of expression, creativity has a way of making us feel whole. And it doesn’t have to happen in a basement. Maybe it happens in a kitchen, where the scent of something familiar stirs nostalgia. Maybe it happens in a corner of a room filled with light. The beauty of creativity is that it finds a home wherever we let it.
As I work with individuals in group homes, I see the same sense of discovery unfold. Conversations about leisure often turn into moments of revelation. Each time we explore new activities, I witness excitement as they uncover interests they hadn’t considered before. It’s a reminder that possibilities are endless when we tailor experiences to fit personal passions. Finding that “just right” activity is like unlocking a door to self-expression, confidence, and accomplishment. I’ve seen firsthand how a simple creative moment can brighten someone’s world.
Creativity as a Connection ~
But creativity doesn’t have to be grand or complicated. It can be as simple as coloring, writing a few lines of poetry, or arranging materials in a way that feels right. It’s about giving ourselves permission to explore without expectation. It’s about recognizing that joy can be found in small moments of making, shaping, and dreaming.
So, where is your creative space? Is it a table filled with memories, a quiet nook, or a well-loved kitchen? Wherever it is, embrace it. Let your thoughts and ideas flow freely. Transform your space into a canvas for your dreams.
Because creativity, in all its forms, is a gift—to ourselves, and to the world.
Where is your creative table? What changes do you need to make to the room, environment or tools to allow yourself and those that you care to access that table.....the creative space.
How Pam supports others in creativity ~
Pam, can help support you in that process. As a sibling, to an individual with developmental disabilities, life was filled with modifications and adaptations to succeed with "coming to the table". Supporting the caregivers and those that provide service, is a lifelong mission. Each individual has unique needs, and each support or tool can be different for that person. As one individual that Pam has provided support to, found that she was able to interact with fun creative materials after Pam developed a long handled tool to allow her to hold and reach. So rewarding for both Pam and the individual.
Come follow along as we continue the journey. It is a privilege to guide caregivers in helping and assisting the individual. And now, Pam has the privilege to carry on connecting other generations of many abilities.
